Poland has strengthened its defenses in the northeast of the country by equipping the 15th Mechanized Brigade Zawiszak with modern K2 Black Panther tanks manufactured in South Korea.
The unit is strategically positioned in Gieżycko, near the border with Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave, and its main mission is to protect NATO’s eastern flank against possible threats from Russia and Belarus. The site houses the so-called Suwałki Gap, a point considered vulnerable in case of conflict, as it connects Poland to Lithuania.
Previously equipped with T-72 and PT-91 Twardy tanks, the brigade began receiving the new K2s between 2023 and 2024, while the older vehicles were sent to Ukraine to bolster resistance against the Russian invasion.
It is expected that another 96 K2 tanks will arrive in Poland in 2025. In addition, a new contract includes the purchase of 180 additional units, including 64 in the K2PL version, adapted for the Polish Army. Weighing 55 tons, the K2 features 120 mm armament, a 1,500-horsepower engine, and advanced electronic systems that enhance its effectiveness and mobility on the battlefield.
